While plate neck defenses in the 14th century were either not used or did not survive (maille was the primary metal neck defense), they are required for sparring activities in most WMA groups as well as the SCA. Thus WTC offers this "brigandine" gorget constructed in a manner and style consistent with other 14th century armour such as splinted limb defenses and the "Coat of Plates" in order to provide adequate neck protection for modern sparring activities while maintaining a period appropriate appearence.
This gorget provides the required protection for SCA heavy list and SCA rapier as well as cut and thrust. It is recommended that some padding be worn underneath this gorget, particularly over the collarbones for heavy list and cut and thrust.
These brigandine gorgets are made with high quality 6 oz. chrome oil tanned leather on top of 18 gauge steel plates which are primed and painted for rust protection. The 2 neck plates are 16 gauge steel for extra durability. The leather shell is hand stitched together using waxed linen thread and the rivets are solid brass and peined with a hammer. We do NOT use pop rivets, jiffy rivets or anything of the sort.
These gorgets are designed to be able to have the front half overlap over the back half to provide some flexibility in fitting. Each gorget can adjust about 2-3 inches in neck circumference before gapping. The gorget shown in the pictures is a medium over a light gambeson on a 15.5" neck and as you can see there is still an inch of overlap left on each side.
All sizes are kept in-stock in black leather. Other leather colors may be in stock or may require a few days for production and shipping.
